Summary of ROBIN POLING’s Work Experience

Thirteen years running my own small English teaching business, plus private contract side work before that in addition to a couple of decades of work experience classroom teaching, tutoring, researching and writing, and studying a variety of related aspects of English instructing and educating for adult higher education students (college/university/professionals, running start and early start students etc)from other countries/cultures. I also have several years of experience interacting with a wide variety of students (student service efforts including teaching basic computer skills). Most of this work has been with international students, and immigrants as well as average college/university age students 18-75 yrs. Old teaching the English language.

I am trying to stay current in my field during the transition time and as I return to outside-the-home employment.

I worked in libraries, bookstores, and have other clerical and retail experience, as well as supervising workers, organizational and home/family management skills including planning, budgeting, organizing people, space, and data, appointment setting/scheduling, inventory, cooking, dishes, shopping, decorating and event creation/management, cleaning, mending, laundry, interior design, easy sewing, and related homemade arts and crafts project skills mostly beyond my ‘professional English for Speakers of Other Languages instructor’ employment so far.

I try to be the best I can be in or outside my field in my work role(s) to meet student/institutional-employer/company academic needs, earning a living wage to take care of my property, family, and home improvement needs, eventual retirement and old-age healthcare needs, continuing education, and potential additional costs to fund from my employment, as well as driving in to work since many educational locations are at some distance from my current home.

I am willing to take a more responsible daytime position where I have some background and experience. My multiple marketable skills should enable me to work in such a position.

Poling English Co

I have been employed from 2005-2018 in my own small business.

I like teaching the English language and fine literature to adults--professionals, business people, other regular and slow learners (for whatever the reasons). My company handled tutoring for all levels of ES/FL learning, cultural adjustment helps for those who requested such, and referrals for other types of concerns. I attempt to be at my personal best, reviewing and continuing to learn in the field. Prior to this I held positions in higher education involving classroom teaching and lecturing, including instructor/tutor (with some counseling); researcher/writer.

Education

Near PhD. level education with extensive professional development in the field of English for Speakers of Other Languages, including some English literature instruction.

In the last few years I have been reviewing the Western Literary Canon and American literature again in the hopes of more literature teaching work within or in addition to English Language (E.S./F.L.) instruction. Teaching literature is a strong motivation for my employment in the field.

M.A. 'Ethnic Studies/Cross-cultural Issues' or Multicultural Studies explains my Master’s degree (Seattle Pacific University) including internships plus extensive professional development efforts over the year in the field of TESL/TEFL. English as a Second or Foreign Language Teaching Certificate, Washington Academy of Languages, Seattle, Washington. B.A. (Western WA University, Fairhaven College, Bellingham, Washington)
